This week, The Boyfriend and I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the premiere of “Men in Black 3,” and the after party at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum here in New York.
First things first: A quick review of the movie, spoiler free.
The movie is great. I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise, but I throughly enjoyed it. If you remember “Men in Black 2,” you’ll remember that it was…. well bad, and very disappointing for fans of the original film. “Men in Black 3” more than makes up for it. I would even go as far to say as the third movie is better than the first.
“Men in Black 3” is a time travel story. If you haven’t seen the trailers, Josh Brolin plays a young version of Tommy Lee Jones’ character. Josh Brolin perfectly mimics Jones as the 1969 version of Agent K, recreating with Will Smith the same chemistry that made the original movie great. The script for “Men in Black 3,” has a solid story. There’s still plenty of humor and over the top alien action, but this time they added a little more heart to make a well rounded film. That’s about all I want to say without giving anyway and plot of joke spoilers. The film looks beautiful as well, both special effects and the comic book alien aesthetic. It’s a treat to experience 1969 in the MIB universe.
The Boyfriend and I were among the last to make our way out of the theatre. I think we may be the only people left in the world that stay ‘till the end of the credits, regardless of whether or not there’s an extra scene after them. Because of this, and the fact I had to walk four avenues and four blocks in a new pair of heels, we arrived at the after party just in time for the fireworks to start.
As we made our way down the flight deck, pass the stage and through the crowd towards the fireworks display, we were greeted by stations of free food and drinks. I immediately proceeded to eat my ticket price worth of free food (‘cause I’mma fatty fat fatty). Meanwhile The Boyfriend/Prop Nerd instantly noticed that the deck was littered with props from the film on display.
Shortly after the fireworks there became a commotion on the stage. We were quite a distance from the stage at this point, but fortunately festival screens were up on our end of the flight deck, and we had a live feed of the stage. Pitbull had come on stage, and was performing the new theme song for “MIB3.” When I first heard the song a couple of weeks ago, I was disappointed, but I must admit, it’s grown on me. He continued on with a short set concert.
Later in the evening, I was enjoying the food and taking in the view of the city when a second commotion came from the stage. Jaden Smith had taken the stage, accompanied by none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff. Soon Will Smith joined his son and longtime DJ/friend on the stage. I sent in The Boyfriend to get photos closer to the stage (and to get a better view of the concert, him being the big “Fresh Prince” fan). Among the songs in their set were the original MIB theme and the theme to Fresh Prince. Willow Smith joined them on stage half way through, but she didn’t partake in the rapping/singing. After the Smith Family concert, DJ Jazzy Jeff proceeded to DJ the rest of the evening’s dancing.
In short I recommend “Men in Black 3.” Also, if you live in the New York City area, I recommend keeping an eye on http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/ to get a chance to catch when other events like this movie and after party become available to the public! This event carried a ticket price of $150, but I feel that I got my money’s worth. Plus the money goes to maintaining the Intrepid Museum!
